Order invitations too early and your guest list changes. Here’s a realistic timeline that keeps everything moving in the right order.
12+ Months Before
This is foundation-laying season. Set your budget, draft a rough guest list (even a loose headcount helps you pick the right size venue), choose a date or a short list of dates, and start touring venues. Venues and in-demand photographers are often the first things to book, sometimes a year or more out, so don’t wait on these two.
9-11 Months Before
With your venue locked in, start shopping for your dress or suit (alterations take time, so earlier is better), and begin researching caterers, florists, and your DJ or band. This is also a good window to start your wedding party conversations, since asking early gives everyone time to plan around the date.
6-8 Months Before
Book your caterer and confirm the menu, hire your florist, and finalize your DJ or band. Send save-the-dates, especially if you have guests traveling from out of town. Book your hair and makeup trial for later in this window if you can.
4-6 Months Before
Order invitations, book transportation for the wedding day, and arrange accommodation blocks for out-of-town guests. This is also when most couples finalize ceremony details with their officiant and buy the rings.
2-3 Months Before
Mail your invitations (aim for 8+ weeks before the wedding), draft your seating chart, and confirm your final guest count with your caterer. This is also a good time for your final dress or suit fitting and a first draft of your vows.
1 Month Before
Finalize your seating chart, confirm details with every vendor (times, deliveries, arrival windows), and build your day-of timeline so everyone in your wedding party knows what’s happening when.
Week Of and Day Of
Confirm arrival times with all vendors, give your caterer the final headcount, delegate day-of tasks to your wedding party so nothing falls on you, and then — genuinely — try to enjoy it. All the planning was for this one day.
