Start With Your Non-Negotiables
Before touring anything, agree on the handful of things that actually matter to you both — indoor vs. outdoor, a specific region, a rough guest capacity, whether you want the ceremony and reception in the same place. Touring venues without this list leads to falling for places that don’t actually fit your day.
Ask About What’s Included — Specifically
“Included” means different things at different venues. Ask directly: Are tables and chairs included? Linens? Is there an in-house caterer, or can you bring your own? Is there a bridal suite? What’s the overtime fee if your reception runs long? Get these answers in writing before you sign anything.
Check the Guest Capacity Against Your Real List
A venue’s listed capacity is often a maximum, not a comfortable number. Ask what capacity looks like with a dance floor, a band, and a head table set up — not just rows of chairs.
Visit at the Time of Day You’ll Actually Use It
A venue that looks beautiful at 2pm might look completely different at your 6pm ceremony time. If possible, tour at the time of day your wedding will actually happen so you see the real lighting.
Ask About Backup Plans
For any outdoor ceremony, ask specifically what the rain plan is — not just “we have one,” but where guests would actually sit and how much setup time it takes to switch.
Read Reviews for Patterns, Not Just Ratings
A few reviews mentioning the same specific issue — slow bar service, a difficult venue coordinator, parking problems — are worth taking seriously, even if the overall rating is high.
